Choosing the Right School, Choosing a Better Future

As part of Ohio School Choice Week, students reflect on how choosing the right school opened doors to opportunity

When Davonte M., a junior at the Academy for Urban Scholars High School (AUS) in Youngstown, began exploring high school options, he was looking for more than a classroom. He wanted support, hands-on learning, and a school that would help prepare him for life after graduation.

The scholars participate in Ohio’s School Choice Week by highlighting opportunity, access, and student-centered education. For many AUS scholars, school choice represents a second chance, a fresh start, and a clear path toward graduation.

“I chose Urban because I feel like the teachers really help, and there are a lot of hands-on learning opportunities, and different trades and credentials to gain while in high school,” said Davonte.

Students like, Zion E., a junior at AUS’s Toledo campus, have expressed that the school has supported him and cares about his success.

“It’s a great school for you to come to,” said Zion. “The teachers are uplifting, and I’m going to graduate a year early.”

For other students, AUS offers a better fit after struggling in traditional school environments.

“I wasn’t the best kid at other schools. Big crowds weren’t a good fit for me,” said Tavian J., a senior at AUS’s Canton campus. “I heard about AUS from a former student, checked it out, and now I’m here. The teachers and staff really care.

The individualized support also helps students not only earn credits but also build confidence and real-world experiences.

“It’s a good school,” said Dominic C. a junior at AUS Columbus. “The teachers are wonderful.”
